The love, respect, and esteem we feel for others are motivated by a wide range of feelings, which means that the inspiration that lies behind our appreciation will seldom be rooted in notions of perfection. As a result of this, we gain little when we idealize our loved ones. Putting the people we care about on a pedestal can make normal interactions difficult because we either begin to feel unworthy of the notice of friends and family or are disappointed when these individuals do not live up to our expectations. When we choose to love others, understanding that they have faults and failings like all human beings, we are better prepared to appreciate the wonderful qualities they bring to our relationships.
